AIA Report Confirms Life Expectancy, Sustainability of Modular Construction

by Rachel Ten Eyck 20. November 2009 05:16

“The life cycle expectancy of modular construction is the same as conventional, and in a world where sustainability is gaining momentum each day, there are also several basic principles intrinsic to the modular process that make it more eco-friendly than conventional construction.”
-American Institute of Architects “External Issues and Trends Affecting Architects, Architectural Firms, and the AIA” – American Institute of Architects, February 2008

This recent report by the AIA tracking trends in the architectural profession confirms what we’ve known all along: our modular method of construction allows us to construct sustainable multi-family buildings that simply last just as long as a building constructed using conventional “site built” methods.  Modular construction, however, offers some noteworthy advantages that prove its value over conventional building methods.

First, modular construction uses material components more wisely than the conventional construction process does. At DeLuxe, we’re able to produce custom length steel components that produce little if any waste. Additionally, our steel itself has about 70% recycled content. It also makes buildings greener in another sense: steel is nontoxic and helps to eliminate allergy problems.

DeLuxe also recycles any excess material components used in the construction of our buildings. Traditional construction jobsites often toss excess scraps into a dumpster rather than sort them for recycling.

Yet another way modular is green: because modular construction entails building offsite in an enclosed facility, it imposes less of a strain on the environment.  The obvious benefits are less disruption to the construction site, and much less waste on site to pollute the environment.

Building using environmentally conscious methods and materials has become a necessity, and modular construction--as noted by the AIA--is the ideal way to construct sustainable buildings.  Building modular not only lessens waste, but lessens the overall impact on the environment. We’re proud that our modular construction methods are eco-friendly, and we look forward to making advances in our building methods that further contribute to green construction.
