When most people think “modular”, they think of small prefabricated homes that vaguely resemble trailers. In reality, modular construction methods are used not only to build those smaller prefabricated homes, but buildings dozens of stories high, as well as vehicles and ships. In fact, Systems-Built Construction methods have long been employed by architects in order to easily assemble and then disassemble structures.  For example, the modular wood, glass and iron Crystal Palace, designed by Joseph Paxton, was erected for the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London and was then disassembled and moved to another part of London. Modular construction practices were subsequently used to build ships during World War II, due to a need to build quickly and efficiently.

Today, luxury cruise liners, as well as the US Navy employ modular construction methods for ships.  For cruise liners, cabins are constructed at an onshore site, and then carried onto the ship and installed as completed units. The use of modular construction methods for shipbuilding reduces onboard work time which in turn shortens the shipbuilding cycle. Efficiency is also improved, as field assembly work now takes place in a production facility. Automotive giants also use modular assembly line methods, by assembling separate modules including the chassis, interior and body on separate assembly lines and then connecting the pieces on a final assembly line.  Aside from efficiency, additional benefits include reduced building costs due to standardized assembly line methods, and consistent quality.
